God’s Promises
With the rising tide of insecurity and the ravaging of the new variant of the Covid 19 virus, I found it necessary to remind us of the provisions of security that God has made available to us, His children. So that though you may go through hell and high waters, you will not burn and you will not drown.
Hallelujah. Amen.
It is in times like these that we must be intimated of the guarantees of the Lord’s mercies. For they are new every morning.
When speaking of the Lord’s mercies towards us, we must answer these pressing questions;
¹Has God said, “‘a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you’ in other words, has God really promised us safety?”
²If He did say that, then the next logical question to ask is, “can we bank on these promises?”
³If we can bank on these promises, “then how consistently can we bank on them or does the bank have closing hours and day offs?”
These are the inarticulate groanings of the believer found in the midst of a crisis.
Thankfully, the scripture has answers, not just answers but answers that bring peace and hope that are both life-giving and soul refreshing.
Hallelujah!
Today, we address the first question.
Let’s look at some rich promises and their practicality in the life of people.
Here is the general disposition of God and this is His promise to us.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11
Stop saying you do not know what God wants for you. Stop saying ‘maybe this evil is from the Lord.’ His thoughts towards you are thoughts of peace and not of evil and He ultimately wants you to have a great future.
God is not like the idols of the nations who, by their behaviour, can be likened to spoilt brats throwing temper tantrums at every given opportunity. You have to appease them all the time or else they will be angry. And when they make a promise, it will cost you an arm and a leg. Not so with this God of ours.
Our God is not just powerful, He is kind, merciful and tender hearted towards us. If you have a belief that God can sometimes wish you harm, you have been misled. Most of the things we ascribe to God is actually from the devil or from our recklessness.
Remember this, the blessings of the Lord makes rich and adds no sorrow (Proverbs 10:22). So I repeat, stop saying you don’t know what God wants for you. Stop saying maybe this evil is from the Lord. His thoughts towards you are thoughts of peace and not of evil and He ultimately wants you to have a great future.
Isn’t that a good place to say ”Hallelujah”?
Hear what the Psalmist says about God’s estimation of you.
⁴What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?
⁵For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
⁶You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,
Psalms 8:5-6 NKJV
Some Hebrew scholars have said the word for angels here is actually the word for God – Elohim!
While some agree and some debate it, the message is undebatable and undeniable – God places a huge premium on you.
He compares you to His glorious angels and to Himself for we are the only beings created in His image. I believe there is no higher compliment than that.
Hallelujah!
Exploring these promises makes me want to shout hallelujah again and again.
⁵…For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
⁶So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
Hebrews 13:5-6 NKJV
¹The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
² When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell.
³ Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident.
Psalms 27:1-3
No man, no bandit, no robber can do anything to you. Are you living in fear? Then you have not claimed His promises in your life.
You don’t need the strength of numbers when you have the Lord on your side. For one with the Lord is a majority.
Hallelujah!
Are you afraid of the plague in the land? Here is his promise towards you.
And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you.
Deuteronomy 7:15 NKJV
God has promised and He will not change His mind, Hallelujah, none of these diseases in the land will come near you.
In rounding off, let me share a personal testimony here.
Some years ago when I was still in the ancient city of Benin, I had a troubling dream.
In that dream, my brother and I were playing hide and seek or something like that around the stairwell of the house in Benin city. Then suddenly armed robbers came to attack us. They were outside the stairwell and we could see them through the lattice but they could not see us. They tried to breach the doors but couldn’t so we began to pray for God to intervene. And just as we did, mobile police (aka mopol) came to our rescue.
I woke up tensed and hyperventilating. I shared the vision with the only person in the house with me that day – my mother – and we prayed about it, claimed the promises of God for protection and safety and went back to sleep. My brother, who was in the vision, was in Lagos at the time or so we thought.
Few hours later, my brother comes knocking at the door at about 2am. He had taken a bus from Lagos to come over to Benin. And then he shared with us how armed robbers stormed the road but by the mercies of God, mopol officers came to their rescue.
Hallelujah once again!
This was not some coincidence and this was not the first nor was it the last of such delay of God’s mercies and protection experienced by me and my family.
Just as a footnote here, let me say I grew up in the ancient city of Kano and I have seen and experienced many, many great deliverances from evil…
As we continue in this series, I shall speak of more of them.
God has given us great and precious promises and I want you to know that the devil will attempt to contradict them and challenge them… but if we will hold on to our faith and claim these promises, we will enjoy the richness of His mercy and His protection.
Hallelujah!
Amen!
I hope you were blessed and your faith in the promises of God for your protection and safety rei-nvigorated.
