It’s the season of Politics and Power, so let’s talk politics a bit.

Very often our desire to stay sanctified as God’s people ends up with us being isolated. Because we fear contamination, we fail to do one of our core duties – service to humanity. So just like the priest and the Levite in the parable of the good Samaritan, we turn a blind eye to the suffering and evil that is happening around us. But let me assure you; we can have contact without contamination. It’s called being the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Sadly, the salt is losing its taste and the light is gradually fading away. That’s why I have titled this write up, “When the children of light are in the dark.”

It is based on the words of Jesus as recorded by St. Luke;
“… the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.”
Luke 16:8 KJV

We are here again, in another generation of the world and they are still the wiser… Join me in this my contemplation and tell me what you think.
Did you know that one of the kings God told Elijah to anoint was a Gentile? Not just that, did you also know that this Gentile king was destined to wage war against Israel and kill them mercilessly? While that is still sinking in, let me also ask you, did you know that the prophets knew in advance what this Gentile king would do and yet they anointed him?
“Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria.”
I Kings 19:15 NKJV

Although God gave the instructions to Elijah to anoint Hazael king over Syria, it was Elisha who carried out the instructions. Elijah had delegated it to him. At the time, Hazael was just an errand boy to the then king of Syria.
“And the king said to Hazael, “Take a present in your hand, and go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the Lord by him, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this disease?’ ” So Hazael went to meet him and took a present with him, of every good thing of Damascus, forty camel-loads; and he came and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Syria has sent me to you, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this disease?’ ” And Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You shall certainly recover.’ However the Lord has shown me that he will really die.” Then he set his countenance in a stare until he was ashamed; and the man of God wept. And Hazael said, “Why is my Lord weeping?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: Their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword; and you will dash their children, and rip open their women with child.” So Hazael said, “But what is your servant—a dog, that he should do this gross thing?” And Elisha answered, “The Lord has shown me that you will become king over Syria.” Then he departed from Elisha, and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he answered, “He told me you would surely recover.” But it happened on the next day that he took a thick cloth and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face so that he died; and Hazael reigned in his place.”
II Kings 8:8‭-‬15 NKJV

Here are a few misconceptions that God’s people have;
1. At first, we think God would not want His prophet to anoint (or endorse) a Gentile as king.

2. Then for those who accept that this might be possible, they still find it hard to believe that God’s choice will bring harm. (After all, only good and perfect gifts come from God. True).

3. When the children of light see the pain brought about by ‘the prophetically chosen leader’, they begin to think, ‘maybe the prophet regrets it now’ or ‘I am sure if the prophet knew this would happen, he would not have made that choice’. But Elijah and Elisha knew in advance what Hazael would do to Israel.

4. The most tragic and disappointing misconception that the children of light have is to think that the purpose or goal is measured by the immediate not the ultimate.
The purpose of Hazael was to uproot the weeds of institutionalised evil in the Land;
“And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay”.
I Kings 19:17 NKJV

On the surface, all that the people saw was war coming from the Syrians but from the prophetic perspective, it was a foundational reform that was taking place. Yes, there will be innocent casualties, as is the case with every surgical operation, but in the end the whole will be saved. For this reason we must be willing to sacrifice the immediate for the ultimate.
Only an insensitive surgeon will say the blade won’t hurt. No true prophetic voice will tell you ‘Hazael’ is doing a good job just because he sees the ultimate goal. At best he will say, ‘Hazael is a necessity’. To maintain the integrity of your message, you must call a spade a spade. The rod the father uses to discipline a child, he will eventually cast away, and the child he will yet embrace. Like Babylon was used to discipline Israel, but once the Lord was through with her she too faced judgement. Therefore, do not praise the rod because of its work, lest it becomes Nehushtan.

Other reforms would take place under other leadership and diverse kind of forces. Some forces are radical and merciless like “the sword of Hazael” and others are prophetic and spiritual like “the sword of Elisha”. I say prophetic and spiritual because Elisha did not slay anyone with a physical sword, except that he brought down, by his prayers, destruction upon the forty-two children of Beth-el, that idolatrous city, 2 Kings 2:24; and the famine he brought forth by the word of the Lord, 2 Kings 8:1. Elisha did not slay with an iron sword but by the sword that came out of his mouth, the word of God.

In the end, each ‘sword’ works towards one same surgical goal – complete and total restructuring and salvation of the nation.
May God restore the upper hand of wisdom to the children of light that we may not be at the mercy of the children of the world. And that we may not be in the dark.

Final words:
The ways of God are past finding out, but His secrets are with those that fear Him.
Let the sons of Issachar arise and tell us what time it is and what Israel ought to do.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
