The Untold Story of Christmas

Christmas is the day that holds all time together.
~Alexander Smith~

Many are familiar with what happened that Christmas morning in Bethlehem when Herod tried to kill the New Born King as soon as He was born, but very few know what happened in the heavens the night before. Fortunately for us, the book of Revelation gives us a sneak peek into the events in Heaven that shaped all of history forever.

A sign was seen in Heaven, a Woman clothed in the Sun with the Moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. This Woman was in labour and before her was the dragon ready to devour her child as soon as He was born. (See Revelation 12:1-2)

This explains what happened on earth that fateful day. This vision tells us that the actions of Herod that day wasn’t just the actions of an insecure king who was willing to secure his throne at all cost (even if that cost was the blood of innocent children), it was in fact a case of forces beyond human control waging cosmic battles over the fate of mankind, as angels and devils collided. In other words, there were more players on the scene that day than Herod, the wise men, the shepherds and the young Jewish couple.

Herod’s decision to have the Saviour killed was clearly not self-inspired, it was influenced by the dragon; that is by Satan. Even so, the decision of the wise men not to report back to Herod wasn’t based on their wisdom, they were guided by angels and so was Joseph’s plan to take the Child to Egypt. Decisions were made on earth but influenced by forces from beyond the earth.

7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out… Revelation 12:7-9

And as soon as the battle was won in the Heavens, victory was inevitable in the earthly realm.

The key to victory here is that ‘there was no longer a place found for the enemy in heaven’ and why is that? It’s because someone denied him a place in heaven. The wise men’s initial decision to tell Herod where the king was born would have given the enemy a chance to destroy Him – that is what the scripture means by the enemy having a place in heaven. But once they denied Herod the location of Baby Jesus, they invariably denied the dragon a place in Heaven.

The untold story of Christmas isn’t just one of glad tidings, neither is it some fairy-tale of a royal delivery of a child. It is a story of triumph over dark forces scheming for the destiny of the entire creation. It is a story of joy secured in the battle field of the Heavens.

As we celebrate Jesus this season, and as we cast our treasures and trophies before Him, let us remember that the Joy of Christmas is secured by only those who give no place to the devil.

Merry Christmas everyone.

“Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Ephesians 4:26-27
